Stephen Hiscock
Biografía profesional
Dr. Hiscock is a General Surgeon in Salmon Arm, a small community in southern British Columbia, Canada.??Raised in Labrador City (a rural and remote mining town about 18,000 km from Perth (give or take)), Stephen received his MD from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1992 and completed a residency in General Surgery at MUN in 1998.??His entire career has been spent in a rural setting. He was promoted to Professor (Clinical) at the University of British Columbia in 2024. In an effort to increase the attendance of rural physicians at the Canadian Surgery Forum, Dr. Hiscock spearheaded efforts to provide more relevant education for these rural surgeons.??Part of that work included organizing free daycare at this national meeting.??These improvements resulted in doubling attendee registration over just a seven year period. It has been determined that the biggest barrier to getting doctors to work in rural Canada is obtaining a license in a different province/territory, so Dr. Hiscock set to work in establishing a pilot project in Newfoundland/Labrador to facilitate medical licensing.??While the project was not ultimately successful, these efforts have been cited as pivotal to the creation of the new “Atlantic Canada medical license” whereby just one is sufficient for the four Atlantic provinces – a very significant improvement. By 2015 a lack of endoscopy training for residents resulted in the probation of the University of British Columbia’s General Surgery Residency program with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Hiscock has been described as “saving” this program by establishing an endoscopy rotation for PGY-3’s in Salmon Arm.? Stephen is a father of six, grandfather of three, and (so far) has a wife who says she still loves him.
