The optimal timing of appendectomy in cases of acute appendicitis remains a subject of debate. This study compares clinical outcomes between early and delayed appendectomy in patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
A retrospective hospital-based study was conducted over four-year period from January 2020 to December 2024. A total of 701 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were diagnosed with acute appendicitis were included. Data was collected using predesigned proforma and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 26. The primary outcome measures included postoperative leukocyte count, length of hospital stay, surgical site infection (SSI), time to initiation of soft diet, and readmission within 30 days.
Delayed appendectomy in patients with acute appendicitis was significantly associated with poorer clinical outcomes, including prolonged hospitalization, delayed return to oral intake, a higher incidence of surgical site infections, and increased 30-day readmission rates underscoring the potential benefits of early surgical intervention in improving patient recovery and reducing postoperative complications.
