Background: Robotic-assisted colorectal surgery has been increasingly adopted to overcome limitations of conventional laparoscopic surgery. While international studies suggest potential benefits in selected outcomes, Australian data remain limited.
Aim: To compare short term outcomes between robotic-assisted and conventional colorectal resections performed by two consultant colorectal surgeons at a single institution.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study will include adult patients undergoing colorectal resection either with robotic-assisted approach or conventional surgery within the defined study period. The primary outcome is 30-day postoperative morbidity. Secondary outcomes include operative time, estimated blood loss, conversion to open surgery, length of hospital stay, time to return of bowel function, anastomotic leak, surgical site infection, 30-day readmission, reoperation, and mortality.
Results: We hypothesise that robotic-assisted colorectal surgery will be associated with reduced short-term postoperative morbidity, lower conversion rates, and shorter length of stay.
Conclusion: This study will provide contemporary, surgeon-matched Australian data on the short-term outcomes of robotic versus conventional colorectal surgery. The findings aim to inform local practice, guide patient selection, and contribute to the growing evidence regarding the clinical value of robotic colorectal surgery.
